What are the ingredients in banana bread? Learn how bananas, flour, sugar, and eggs come together for the perfect loaf every time

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 ripe bananas (mashed)

  • 1¾ cups (220 g) all-purpose flour

  • ½ to ¾ cup (100150 g) granulated sugar or brown sugar

  • 2 large eggs

  • ½ cup (120 ml) vegetable oil or melted butter

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • 1 tsp baking soda

  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon (optional)

  • ¼ tsp salt

  • Optional:

    • ½ cup chopped walnuts or pecans

    • ½ cup chocolate chips

    • A dash of nutmeg or allspice

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×5-inch loaf pan or line with parchment paper.

  • Mix the wet ingredients: In a large bowl, mash the bananas. Add eggs, oil (or melted butter), sugar, and vanilla. Whisk until smooth.

  • Add dry ingredients: Gently stir in flour, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt. Mix just until combined—do not overmix!

  • Fold in extras: Stir in nuts, chocolate chips, or dried fruit if using.

  • Bake: Pour batter into the prepared loaf pan. Bake for 50–60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

  • Cool: Let cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.

Notes

  • Use bananas with brown spots—they’re sweeter and softer.

  • Don’t overmix! A lumpy batter makes a tender loaf.

  • Want it extra moist? Add ¼ cup of Greek yogurt or sour cream to the wet mix.
